Wildfire Prevention Exercise Set for North Carolina Town

March 8, 2005

The N.C. Division of Forest Resources is planning a fire prevention exercise from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in Boiling Spring Lakes to help residents take proactive action to reduce potential damage from wildfires.

Staff and personnel from the Nature Conservancy and the Boiling Spring Lakes Fire Department will go door-to-door in the Greensboro Road area delivering brochures on removing vegetation, cleaning gutters and using fire-resistant building materials. Crews will have worksheets to give homeowners to help them assess fire hazards near their homes.

Strong sea breezes, dry weather and abundant fire-prone vegetation make the town vulnerable if a wildfire breaks out, said Mike Hardison, a district ranger. There have been 50 wildfires in Boiling Spring Lakes since 1980, according to the state Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
