LOS ALTOS HILLS, Calif. (AP) -- A man pinned beneath rubble inside his home after a natural gas explosion leveled the two-story building was pulled from the debris Thursday, police said.
The man, whose name was not immediately released, was trapped under a roof frame for several hours after the early morning blast. Witnesses said he was conscious and talking to rescue workers while they freed his right ankle. The extent of his injuries was not immediately known, but authorities said they weren't life-threatening.
The explosion leveled most of the home. Wood shards and insulation were blown into a yard next door, and magazines and plywood were caught in surrounding trees.
''The whole back end of the house is completely on the ground. It's remarkable that the three people in the house are alive and doing quite well,'' said Tom Walsh, a Santa Clara County senior deputy fire marshal.
Two children, ages 4 and 6, were treated for minor injuries at an area hospital and released.
Two firefighters also were injured, Santa Clara County Fire Captain Thomas Tornell said. He did not know the extent of their injuries.
Tornell said roughly half of the home collapsed.
Firefighters and Pacific Gas and Electric workers were trying to determine what caused the explosion.
