ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) -- Alexandria fire officials said the home where a man died late Wednesday had a history of fire hazard problems.

The unidentified man was found unconscious in the home at 904 Commonwealth Ave., in Alexandria, Va. after firefighters put out the blaze. He was taken to Inova Alexandria Hospital and pronounced dead.

The fire started in the basement and quickly spread to the first and second floors. Damage is estimated at $15,000.

The home had just recently been declared of fire code violations, said a fire department spokeswoman. It was condemned by firefighters in May of 2003 because of a kitchen fire and in February of this year because of problems with a fire place.

The fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature.

The cause remains under investigation.
