POULSBO, Wash. (AP) -- Fire that apparently started in an electrical heating unit destroyed the headquarters of the Ground Zero Center for Non-Violent Action, a longtime nuclear weapons protest group, officials said.
Firefighters from four jurisdictions battled the flames after someone called 911 and reported smoke pouring from the windows, roof and front door of the building shortly after noon Wednesday, according to a Fire Department news release.
No one was inside at the time, nor was the building equipped with smoke alarms, according to the statement.
The blaze apparently originated in an electrical baseboard heater, Deputy Fire Marshal Jerry Cooper said, adding that the building appeared to be a total loss. There was no immediate dollar estimate of damages.
There was no immediate comment from Ground Zero, which has led protests outside the Navy's Trident submarine base at Bangor for decades.
