Investigation Concluded Into Massachusetts Firefighters Conduct At Town Meeting; Charges May Follow
Independent investigator Diane Cochran researched actions surrounding a May 11 public meeting at the selectmen's request. The selectmen discussed a complaint filed by resident John Wilder against Fire Chief Jack Collins during the May 11 meeting, after which 13 firefighters physically threw down their gear behind Town Hall.
Cochran also investigated several other allegations of inappropriate behavior by Collins, the process used to hire Collins, and the release of confidential documents by Carolyn Smart, the administrative assistant to the Board of Selectmen.
Selectman Peter Collins said he was pleased Cochran had completed the report, but still had concerns about entering into the next phase of the investigation, which is to determine whether disciplinary action is needed.
"Of course I'm relieved it's 100 percent done. As far as how smooth things will go, that has yet to be seen. I haven't seen or read the final report or the recommendations. I certainly hope it all goes smoothly," Collins said Tuesday.
The selectmen are scheduled on Jan. 4 to discuss in executive session whether disciplinary actions should be taken against any of the town employees.
Selectman Daniel Murphy also hadn't read the final report Monday night, but felt it would absolve any questions the selectmen had on Cochran's recommendations.
"I don't think we would have had any complications anyway. So now there will be no reasons for (any of the selectmen) to have any concerns," Selectman Daniel Murphy said.
