ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) -- Lightning started several fires north of St. George Wednesday night, including one near Brookside that resulted in officials evacuating about a dozen homes.

Firefighters kept the blaze from reaching any structures, Bureau of Land Management spokesmen said late Wednesday.

Spokesman David Boyd said earlier that the winds had diminished and the fire was laying down.

Another fire burned in Dammeron Valley. The two blazes together, labeled the Dammeron Complex fire, had burned about 1,000 acres.

Lightning and fire burning under a power line caused a number of mostly brief power outages in Washington County. The power was reported restored late Wednesday.

The Utah Hill fire 10 miles west of St. George was contained Wednesday night and the 80 firefighters on it were sent to the Dammeron Complex fire.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said it had approved a fire management grant that will cover 75 percent of the local and state firefighting costs for the fires.
