PETERSBURG, Tenn. (AP) -- The mayor of this small town of 580 residents died early Tuesday morning in a fire at his home.
Richard C. Fulcher, 63, was killed from the fire that broke out around 2 a.m., investigator Joyce McConnell said.
Fulcher's wife, Karen, and daughter, Carla, attempted to rescue him at the house on South High Street, but he did not overcome the injuries he suffered in the blaze. Both women were treated for injuries at Lincoln Medical Center in Fayetteville.
Officials from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the State Fire Marshal's Office also are investigating the incident. The cause of the fire is not yet identified.
