About 10 years ago - when he was 46 - Bayonne's John Fiedorowicz decided to give up his dental lab business and try for a job as a city firefighter or a cop.

At the time, the state had waived the statutory age limit of 35 for people applying to work as municipal public safety employees so Fiedorowicz, a Vietnam veteran, figured he'd give it a shot. "I got myself in super shape - I lost 18 pounds in a month and a half - because I knew they check your speed and agility in the fireman's test," he said.
