BARNSTABLE, Mass. (AP) -- A dog missing for five days was rescued from a drainage pipe Wednesday after people heard howls coming from underground in the Hyannis woods.

Kody, a basset hound mix, was freed by rescuers who dug a trench 16 feet long and as much as 4 feet deep so they could lift the section of pipe into which the dog apparently had crawled, said Hyannis Fire Capt. Joseph Cabral.

Kody was reunited with his owner, Ken Fowler, then taken to Sandwich Animal Hospital. The dog was resting comfortably Wednesday afternoon, said hospital receptionist Heidi Gosselin. No telephone number could be found for Fowler.

A ``missing dog'' poster Fowler had distributed said Kody disappeared early Friday.

On Wednesday, someone reported a dog continuously barking in a wooded area.

``The dog was barking and howling and whatnot and wanted to be out of there, no doubt about that,'' Cabral said.

Workers traced the sound to the 12-inch diameter pipe, which empties into the wooded area.
