Demsey was driving a tanker truck alone when he hit a black calf that was crossing the road sometime after 9 p.m. However, the exact time is still unknown. He slowly went off of the road. Fire Chief, Brian Kreiser, of Special Areas Fire Department in the village of Youngstown, found him there at 3 a.m.
Demsey rolled the tanker approximately 34 miles outside of Youngstown and 20 miles outside of Jenner, according to Kreiser. The grass fire that Demsey was responding to was approximately 18 miles east of Jenner, in a pasture where many patrons of the community bring their calves. It is an area that contains no trees, but there was a concern for some local gas lines possibly being effected and therefore, mutual aid was dispatched to the fire. A fire flared up at the same location again yesterday.
According to Keiser, Demsey was a very experienced driver who had worked with the Youngstown Fire Department for 13 years. He was also a full-time employee for Big Country Waste Management Services Commission. According to Wally Whitehead, Demsey
