CAMP ROBERTS, Calif. (AP) -- The historic ``Club 50'' recreation center at Camp Roberts, a former Army base where hundreds of thousands of soldiers trained during World War II and the Korean War, burned to the ground early Sunday, a base official said.
No one was injured in the fire, which started about 1:30 a.m. The cause wasn't immediately known, Lt. Col. Charles Kimmel said.
The camp currently serves as the principal training center for the California National Guard. The burned building, which housed a recreation facilities, a bar and laundry machines, was one of the original buildings at the base, which was started in 1941.
During World War II, nearly 500,000 soldiers trained at the massive camp, about 200 miles north of Los Angeles. Tens of thousands of troops were again based there during the Korean War. The Army officially left the base in 1970.
