Jan. 21--OAKLAND -- Officials are investigating the cause of two fires several hours apart in the same MacArthur Boulevard apartment unit Friday.
A firefighter received second-degree burns battling the first fire, which started at 10:28 a.m. in a third-floor unit. The injured firefighter was among 21 who responded to the fire. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated and released, but he will be off work for an unspecified amount of time to recover, said Battalion Chief Adrian Sheppard.
The entire building at 273 MacArthur Blvd, near Interstate Highway 580 was evacuated for safety, but damage was confined to the apartment. No residents were hurt, and the resident who lived in the unit was provided housing by the American Red Cross.
The second fire started in a different room in the apartment about 2:13 p.m. and was controlled at 2:34 p.m. No one was injured. There was no estimate on damage late Friday.
