March 01--DOVER -- A man was treated for minor burns when a fire broke out because of a malfunctioning generator Wednesday evening.
A fire at 108 County Farm Cross Road was extinguished when firefighters arrived after a generator the homeowner worked on backfired and ignited. The fire damaged the electric meter on the side of the garage and caused some damage to the side of the structure itself. Deputy Chief Jim Ormand said on scene he was unsure whether the man, his wife, and their son who was there at the time the fire struck, would be able to occupy the home Wednesday night.
Public Service of New Hampshire was called to evaluate the power to the home after the electrical unit was burned, melting the meter and breaking its glass -- exposing the service to the winter elements.
He said firefighters responded to the call at 9:08 p.m. and worked to ensure the fire didn't extend beyond the two car garage and into the residential portion of the home.
"It just goes to show you that anything with gasoline, you have to be safe," Ormand said.
