Pensions Larger Than Salaries For California Chiefs

A quirk in the law allows this to happen

The Associated Press reports that a quirk in California law is allowing fire chief's to retire with pensions that exceed their salaries:

"Since January, the [new] contract lets rank-and-file firefighters retire five years sooner, at age 50 instead of 55, but the Department of Personnel Administration did not extend the same benefit to supervisors.

"The California Public Employees Retirement System says that means supervisors qualify for benefits calculated separately for their time in the rank-and-file and for their time as managers. They also are not subject to the usual cap that limits total pension benefits to 90 percent of their highest salary."

A Personnel Administration spokeswoman is referenced as considering placing firefighting supervisors and rank-and-file employees on the same pension schedule in order to remedy the matter.
