Virginia Squad President Dies in Accident

Faithful Dillwyn Fire Dept Volunteer, Buckingham Volunteer Rescue Squad President, dies after vehicle accident.

Wallace Layne Shumaker, 43, of Buckingham County, was killed in an automobile accident on Saturday, August 6. He was President of Buckingham County Volunteer Rescue Squad and served as 2nd Lieutenant in Dillwyn Volunteer Fire Department.

He is survived by his parents, William T. and Ethelene Reynolds Shumaker of Dillwyn; his sister, Laura Spittle and her husband, David of Amelia, Va.; a brother, William W. and his wife, Michelle Shumaker of Dillwyn; and one niece, Lauren Raye Spittle of Amelia, Va.

He was an employee of Kyanite Mining Corporation for approximately 25 years, a member of the Commonwealth Regional Council (formerly Piedmont Planning Commission).

Chief Mike Johnson of Scottsville Volunteer Rescue Squad said Wallace had been a key member of the fire/rescue service in Buckingham County for many years and a friend to the Scottsville Rescue Squad.

An EMS member of Buckingham Volunteer Rescue Squad said that Shumaker was off duty at the time of the accident, but always on duty in his heart and actions.

Shumaker recently returned from Honduras after serving on a medical mission trip to help those in need in other countries.

Arrangements are as follows:

Family Night - Tuesday August 9, from 1900-2100 at Dunkum Funeral Home in Dillwyn, Virginia.

Funeral - Wednesday August 10, at 1400 at Dunkum Funeral Home in Dillwyn, Virginia

Burial will be at St. Andrews Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Dillwyn Fire Department or the Buckingham County Rescue Squad.
