The Los Angeles County Fire Department lost a captain in the line of duty Tuesday when Fire Captain Daniel Elkins was involved in a single-vehicle accident.
Elkins, 47, was leaving the Pine Incident brushfire in the Lake Hughes area when he was involved in the accident, according to a fire department media advisory. He was transported to Antelope Valley Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Elkins was a 20-year member of the department who lived in the Quartz Hill area of Los Angeles County, and is survived by his wife and two adult children.
According to the L.A. Daily News, Elkins had just finished an 18-hour shift and was driving home at about 8 a.m. when his pickup drifted onto the dirt shoulder, flipped several times and landed several hundred feet from the road. The newspaper reported that investigators believe Elkins may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
The LACoFD did not confirm this information, saying the incident is under investigation and that additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
