Two people were hurt jumping from a window to escape a two-alarm fire that spread to multiple homes in Newark on Thursday night.

Two people were hurt when they jumped from the window of a burning home late Thursday in Newark, officials said.

The blaze broke out around 7:15 p.m. on the third-floor of a residence on Chadwick Avenue, near Hawthorne Place, according to Newark Public Safety Director Brian A. O’Hara.

Two people who jumped were taken to University Hospital, O’Hara said. Information on the conditions of the injured was not immediately available.

Ten residents needed to be relocated after the fire, according to O’Hara, who said about 70 firefighters responded and brought the two-alarm fire under control by around 8:20 p.m.

At least two residential buildings appeared to be heavily damaged. The city’s arson unit was investigating what caused the fire, O’Hara said.
