LA Dwelling Fire Injures Occupant, 6 Displaced

May 12, 2022
Baton Rouge firefighters battled a dwelling fire where one person was seriously injured and six were displaced.

One person was seriously injured and six were displaced by a large fire that began after an overloaded power strip sparked an electrical malfunction at a family home near Government Street Wednesday, the Baton Rouge Fire Department said.

According to BRFD spokesman Justin Hill, first responders were dispatched to a two-story house in the 500 block of S 17th Street shortly before 1 p.m.

When firefighters arrived, they saw "heavy smoke and fire" coming from the home's second floor, Hill said. One of the occupants was seriously injured and was transported to a hospital.

Investigators later determined the fire had been caused by "an electrical malfunction due to an overloaded power strip," Hill said.

Authorities contacted the Red Cross to help the home's displaced residents.
