Fire at IL Resort Destroys 28 Cabins

June 1, 2022
Firefighters from dozens of departments battled the wind-driven fire at Grand Bear Resort in Utica that left many homeless.

Firefighters worked for four hours to contain a fire that ripped through two dozen cabins at Grand Bear Resort in Utica on Memorial Day. Crews stayed on scene for hours dousing hot spots.

Utica fire officials said the fire consumed seven buildings that contained cabins and villas.

About 200 firefighters from 60 fire departments responded to control the fire as it spread from building to building, ABC Chicago reported.

"The wind was so bad because it just happened like on the other side of ours, a couple away from us. It was just the wind blowing so hard yesterday, spreading it across," Paula Smith, a resident who lost everything in the fire told the television station.

A fire at the complex in 2018 also caused extensive damage.
