Minnesota Firefighters Battle Suspected Arson Fire

About 4pm Lakeville VFD and police were dispatched to a reported barn fire at the "Streefland" YMCA day camp, near the intersection of 162nd St. (Klamath trl) and Kenwood.

About 4pm Lakeville VFD and police were dispatched to a reported barn fire at the "Streefland" YMCA day camp, near the intersection of 162nd St. (Klamath trl) and Kenwood. Located in heavily wooded area atop a hill, in the northwest area of the city The first police officer on scene reported the building next to the barn "fully involved". Lakeville VFD, responded in less than five minutes with 2 officers, 3 engines, 1 quint, 1 rescue and two utilities. An ALF ambulance stood by. About 25 firefighters, dropped two 5 inch supply lines, one engine going up the narrow driveway, and the other to the quint which was placed in the street adjacent to the burning structures. Several hand lines and a deck gun were deployed to the fire. The quint also flowed in an attempt to save the barn exposure.

The bulk of the fire was knocked down within an hour. The building of origin, housing a kitchen, hall and storage, was a total loss. The adjacent barn, which was used for office space and storage, was heavily damaged. Initial damage estimates were reported at $150,000. There were no reported injuries.

Police indicated that two teenage suspects were seen fleeing the property shortly before the fire was reported. Ironically teens aged 9-14 were those served at the summer day camp.

Lakeville is offering a $2500.00 reward for information leading to an arrest.

The City of Lakeville is about 20 miles south of Minneapolis. It is a 38 sq. mile area which is home to 43,000 resident. Fire and rescue service is provided by a fully volunteer fire department serving the community from 4 fire stations.
