California firefighters cut through the roof of an overturned car to rescue two people after a suspected drunken driver rear ended the vehicle early Thursday.

The accident happened just after midnight on eastbound Interstate 8, near Baltimore Drive in La Mesa, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.Witnesses told authorities that a 2009 Cadillac CTS had been speeding before striking a Honda Civic from behind, flipping over the Civic.

Heartland Fire & Rescue crews stabilized the Civic and cut through the roof to pull out the driver and passenger. The driver, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to the hospital with major injuries. The passenger only suffered minor injuries, according to the Union-Tribune.

The Cadillac's driver was uninjured, and he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury,
