Heath Consultants Natural Gas Detector Reduces Serious Injury Risks

Heath Consultants developed the Remote Methane Leak Detector First Responder (RMLD-FR™) as a solution to make quick decisions and establish control of natural gas (methane) emergencies and ignition sources.

HOUSTON – Recognizing the potentially hazardous conditions first responders face when called to natural gas (methane) emergencies, Heath Consultants Incorporated (Heath) developed the Remote Methane Leak Detector First Responder (RMLD-FR™) as a solution to make quick decisions and establish control of natural gas (methane) emergencies and ignition sources.

Heath’s RMLD technology has been trusted worldwide since 2005, with thousands of legacy units currently sold. This instrument is based upon our highly successful RMLD legacy and RMLD-CS designs with many of the same features and functionality as the RMLD-CS but with a simplified user interface specific to fire personnel.

This highly advanced technology is capable of detecting natural gas (methane) leaks from a remote distance utilizing TDLAS (tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy). TDLAS enables first responders to quickly scan common venting points of a structure, including through most windows, from up to one hundred feet away to determine if there’s natural gas (methane) present. When the laser passes through a gas plume, a portion of the light is absorbed by the natural gas (methane) and some of the light is reflected back to the instrument. The reflected light is collected and processed so the RMLD-FR can report natural gas (methane) concentrations in Parts-Per-Million-Meter or PPM-M in both audible and visual signals to the operator, allowing first responders to assess the potential safety risks due to the presence of natural gas (methane) and establish proper control of the situation.

The instrument includes features demanded by a growing technology market including GPS, Bluetooth BLE, WiFi, self-test, color camera, graphical user interface and more.
