SALISBURY, N.C. --

A firefighter who fell while fighting a blaze in Salisbury is recovering at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.

Ken Womble of the Miller's Ferry Fire Department fell about 15 feet through the attic of a home on Midsail Road early Tuesday.

The family who lives there had smelled smoke and called firefighters. They went into the attic where the fire began, but the floor gave way and Womble fell, hitting a hutch in the dining room before falling to the floor.

Womble was airlifted to the hospital. Officials said Tuesday afternoon that although he is in a lot of pain, he did not suffer any broken bones.

Womble works for the same department as Justin Monroe, who was killed in a huge mill fire in Salisbury just more than one year ago.

Firefighters paid tribute to Monroe, 19, and fellow fallen firefighter Victor Isler, 40, last weekend.
