(1010 WINS) (NEW YORK) Two veteran Fire Department officers were suspended without pay for allegedly drinking while on duty at a Lower East Side karaoke bar, the fire commissioner announced Friday.
Lt. Robert Doherty, 44, and Capt. Terence Walsh, 40, were found drinking inside the Karaoke Sing Sing on Avenue A at about 9:40 p.m. Thursday, said Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta.
With a third possible alcohol-related incident in the last month, Scoppetta reiterated the 11,000-member department's zero tolerance policy toward drinking on the job.
"Drinking alcohol while on-duty will not be tolerated, and any member of the department found doing so will be dealt with severely," Scoppetta said.
Both Walsh, a 15-year veteran, and Doherty, a 19-year veteran, were in uniform at the bar, Scoppetta said. The two were assigned to the Public Assembly Unit, which inspects bars, restaurants and other venues.
Last week, four FDNY officials were reassigned and two firefighters suspended after inspectors found beer and liquor stashed in a firehouse locker in East Harlem.
Police were also investigating whether alcohol played a role in a New Year's Eve firehouse brawl that left a Staten Island firefighter critically injured.
