Jan. 30--KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- A suspicious fire is under investigation at a high school after a school filled with smoke, forcing students and staff to evacuate Monday.
The fire happened at Kalamazoo Central High School, shortly after 2:00 p.m. Monday afternoon. Firefighters discovered all three floor and four stairwells to be filled with smoke, and flames coming from a third-floor stairwell window.
Staff members attempted to put the fire out with a portable fire extinguisher, but were not successful. Once on scene, firefighters were able to use the extinguisher to put the fire out since they had protective clothing.
The building was in the process of being evacuated when firefighters showed up.
Investigators say that the fire started in the stairwell and only damaged the plexiglass window in the third floor stairwell. The fire is said to be very suspicious in nature.
Kalamazoo Township Fire Marshal Todd Kowalski is continuing to investigate.
