March 30--The City of Pelican Rapids and area townships have agreed on new service contracts that cover up to 10 years. The current three-year contract expires the end of this year.

The townships, as well as the city, say that a long-term contract will be more manageable for all of the governmental entities.

Fire protection contracts are for the townships of Dunn, Erhards Grove, Lida, Maplewood, Norwegian Grove, Pelican, Scambler, Trondhjem, the east half of Tansem Township and city of Erhard.

Contract criteria includes land and building value as well as township population and the average number of annual fire calls.

The Pelican Rapids Volunteer Fire Department is located at 200 South Broadway. Fire chief is Trevor Steeves. There are 24 active firemen and the response area is 360 square miles.

The Pelican Rapids Fire Department is a Class 10 department. Upgrading the classification to 7 or 8, which is a goal, will likely produce savings in insurance premiums for area property owners.
