LEAVENWORTH, Wash. (AP) -- Two helicopters on Friday dropped water on a fire spreading in the Icicle Creek drainage in the Washington Cascades.

The fire had charred between 900 and 1,000 acres 9 miles west of Leavenworth, said David Widmark of the Northwest Interagency Fire Coordination Center in Portland, Ore.

No injuries were reported as firefighters began fighting the blaze.

Widmark said the fire was burning in a recreational area distinguished by steep, rocky ridges. There are campgrounds but no structures.

A voluntary evacution was issued for hikers and campers in the area and a Type 1 management team was called in to assess the fire. That's the highest level of management team.

``That signifies this is going to be a fairly complex fire. This is a very tinder-dry area,'' Widmark said.

The fire, reported Thursday and apparently started by lightning, was burning in ponderosa pine and light grass.
