Four FDNY Firefighters Injured in Apartment Fire

Over 100 firefighters battled the two-alarm fire that broke out at a five-story apartment building nearly a block from a building that caught fire less than 24 hours before.

Four FDNY firefighters were injured Wednesday in a second apartment fire in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood in less than 24 hours.

The two-alarm fire broke out shortly before midnight at a five-story apartment building on 9th Avenue, WABC-TV reports. Over 100 firefighters from roughly 25 units responded to the call.

Video footage showed firefighters leading several people down fire escapes and safely to the street. During the call, four firefighters suffered minor injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The fire happened less than a block away from an apartment building that had firefighters rescuing an elderly woman and two other occupants from the flames. The preliminary cause of that fire was overloaded power strip, and a similar electrical issue was at the root of the latest incident.

"The tenant had no power in the apartment and was taking power from somewhere else with extension cords and that caused the fire," Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said.
