An apartment fire in Vicksburg caused extensive damage to the building and left two families homeless.

The South Kalamazoo County Fire Authority battled an apartment fire that damaged two units, leaving both families homeless.

Firefighters responded to the apartment fire in downtown Vicksburg on Tuesday afternoon after Autumn Zobel noticed smoke near her kitchen trash can, MLive.com reported.

After investigating, Zobel was able to determine the smoke was coming up through a vent in the floor and evacuated the building.

In a video from MLive.com, civilians can be seen controlling the fire with a handline.

Fire crews were able to locate a missing dog and brought it out to EMTs, but attempts to resuscitate it were unsuccessful.

A restaurant located next to the apartment building sustained broken windows along with smoke and water damage.
