Chemical Spill in New York City Hi-Rise Forced Evacuation

A chemical spill in an Upper East Side apartment building forced the evacuation of about 20 people last night, fire officials said.

November 24, 2003 -- A chemical spill in an Upper East Side apartment building forced the evacuation of about 20 people last night, fire officials said.

The chemical - a cleaning product known as Ferroclean - was spilled on the 11th floor of 525 E. 72nd Street at about 9 p.m.

One person was taken to New York Hospital for observation. It was not clear if the chemical was to blame. Some residents were evacuated for about two hours.
