The Worcester Fire Department will soon be able to secure additional tools to assist with the job, thanks to a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The department is purchasing 23 new thermal imaging cameras after it was awarded $213,273 from FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grants and Staffing for Adequate & Fire Emergency Response programs, according to a press release from Worcester Media Relations Specialist Mike Vigneux.
The cameras will allow firefighters to determine fire locations and search for victims. In addition, they can help a firefighter find an exit.
“Thermal imaging cameras have become a very important tool for firefighters,” Worcester Fire Chief Michael Lavoie said in the press release. “This grant will allow all our fire crews to have a thermal imaging camera on the fire ground to enhance the safety of residents as well as their own safety, and will help mitigate incidents quickly and efficiently.”
“We thank FEMA and our congressional delegation for securing the necessary federal funds to outfit our firefighters with these vital thermal imaging cameras,” said City Manager Edward Augustus Jr.
