Skowhegan Chief Richard Fowler is gone.

Aug. 12--SKOWHEGAN, Maine -- The town's fire chief was dismissed Friday, half way through his six-month probationary period, Town Manager Christine Almand confirmed Monday.

Richard Fowler was tapped to serve as fire chief in May, Almand said. He previously had been chief in Farmington, New Hampshire, according to published reports.

Though she declined to say why the chief was fired, noting it was a personnel matter, she did say the dismissal was effective immediately.

Shawn Howard, a captain with the Skowhegan Fire Department, has been appointed interim chief, Almand said. She said the town plans to advertise the post in the coming weeks.
